Northern Rivers is one the fastest growing region in NSW. With its world heritage sites, national parks, rainforests and coastline, its strength is in its diversity. It’s popular for innovative business opportunities, attracting creative people.

The 2016 Northern Rivers Regional Plan outlined a vision for the region – to make it a healthy, prosperous and sustainable future for the communities of the Northern Rivers region.

Seven regional priorities were outlined, with 23 initiatives to make it a reality. This included connected communities, a learning region, natural infrastructure, sustainable industry, inclusive communities, regional identity, and a collaborative region.

A recent dinner in Euston on 1 March 2017 was a highlight as it was an opportunity to celebrate all that the region has achieved in implementing the Robinvale Agribusiness Workforce Development Strategy.

Back in 2014, a “Celebrating Innovation Sunraysia Agribusiness Summit’ was held with sessions including ‘The changing nature of workforce development in Australian Agribusiness – Building the skills base of Sunraysia’.  The momentum from the forum and the identification by industry, employers, education providers and community stakeholders spurred on the development of the strategy and action plan.

In terms of GDP and major investment, this is a region that punches above its weight, where unemployment has also been high and this unique collective impact with community, business and government is making a huge difference.

Transforming Geelong from traditional manufacturing to innovation

Geelong’s unemployment rate has risen to nearly 7.5% – a 1.8% increase from the year before.  With blue and white-collar jobs drying up the city’s unemployment rate is hitting local youth the hardest.

90,000 young Victorians out of work – and no jobs

A recent article describes the 21% youth unemployment in Geelong as “an absolute crisis” – which is well beyond the state’s 16.3% rate.

“We have got youth unemployment at levels that we simply haven’t seen since the global financial crisis.  On top of that, we’ve seen a significant shift in employment overall,” Victorian Council of Social Services’ Chief Executive Emma King emphasised recently.

“So for young people, following such a shift in employment from manufacturing to the service industry, young people simply aren’t getting their fair share of jobs.”

Mildura: An economic hub of inland Australia requiring a skilled workforce

The Mildura region has a vibrant economy that is continuing to grow and adapt to change.

While the traditional industries in the agriculture and horticulture sectors continue to contribute significantly to the regional economy (supplying 98% Australia’s dried fruit, 75% table grapes, 68% almonds and 20% of Australia’s wine grapes), other industry sectors are continuing to develop, such as manufacturing, property development, retail and construction.

Strategic workforce planning to improve skill shortages in Australia’s snow regions

Alpine tourism represents 2% of the Australian tourism industry, but can quickly improve with training and upskilling as there is a skill shortage for employment in all categories, from trades to professional.

There is a particular shortage in trained hospitality staff, including wait staff, bar staff and housekeeping.  Attracting appropriate permanent staff in all areas is more difficult because the local towns are small and quiet outside winter – which is just a 17-week income-earning period.  Fluctuating work hours, the cost of living and transport have a significant impact on attracting and retaining staff whose performance will meet or exceed guest expectations.

Total gross direct visitor expenditure generated by the New South Wales resorts was $537 million and $369 million for the Victorian resorts, totalling $906 million.  This covers all items of visitor expenditures, from food and drink to lift passes, entry fees and travel from place of residence to the resort.

The winter resorts of Falls Creek and Mount Hotham generated an additional $106 million in the gross regional product of the Alpine Shire and 1,375 annual equivalent employment, or 21% of the Shire’s total employment opportunities.

The resort of Mt Baw Baw is located in Victoria’s Baw Baw Shire and the resort contributes $7.5 million to the Local Government Area’s (LGA) headline gross regional product.  Total annual equivalent employment opportunities generated by the Alpine resort were 178, which is 0.8 per cent of the LGA total. Building economic prosperity in the Southern Flinders Ranges, Yorke & Mid North

The region incorporates wine, tourism and a blend of industry common to many regional areas across South Australia.

According to Regional Development Australia (RDA), the Yorke and Mid North region is in the central part of the State with a population of 74,521 representing 4.7% of the State’s population.

The region encompasses the Skills for Jobs in Regions Jobs and Skills Regional Networks of Mid North, Southern Flinders and Yorke Peninsula regions.

The top four industries in the area at the time of Census 2006 included Agriculture, Forestry & Fishing (21.3%), 5708 employed; Retail Trade (13.7%), 3903 employed; Health and Community Services (12.1%), 3,435 employed; and Manufacturing (10.1%), 2,736 employed. Read More
